Outcome of proposal to make City Square, QV Melbourne and Goldsbrough Lane smoke-free

August 13, 2015

The City of Melbourne is committed to protecting the community from passive smoking by expanding smoke-free areas. We are proud to be creating healthy environments for people to live, learn, work and play.

The results from the smoke-free areas community engagement on City Square, QV Melbourne and Goldsbrough Lane were presented to Council on Tuesday 11 August 2015. The Community Engagement Report (PDF, 2.9MB) showed that the majority of businesses, patrons and the general community supported smoking bans in each location.

After carefully considering all feedback, Council voted to endorse the recommendations. Minutes of the meeting can be viewed on the Council and Committee Meetings page.

From 1 October 2015, City Square will be smoke-free between the hours of 6am and 8pm for a 12 month trial period. All day, 24 hour smoking bans will be in place at Goldsbrough Lane and QV Melbourne, also effective 1 October. The City of Melbourne will ensure the community is fully informed about the new smoking bans and will work closely with businesses to ensure there is a smooth transition to these areas becoming smoke-free.
