Melburnians love their pets. We know our furry friends play an important role in the health and wellbeing of so many residents.

We’re exploring ways to keep cats safe and happy, while protecting our environment and community. This could include a cat curfew and/or mandatory desexing. At the moment, we encourage cat owners to desex their pet and keep them on their property.

From 26 July to 26 August 2024 we asked how you are impacted by cats within the City of Melbourne. We wanted to hear from pet owners, residents and animal welfare bodies to make sure our policies continue to meet everyone’s needs.

Feedback we heard will help us decide whether we should introduce mandatory desexing and cat confinement to ensure the ongoing safety and wellbeing of all cats.
