Habitat tree mapping complete in Fawkner Park

October 18, 2019

Over the last few months Citizen Foresters have been helping to record which trees in Fawner Park provide habitat for wildlife, looking specifically for tree hollows and native mistletoe. This information helps us to protect and enhance the habitat value of our urban forest, ensuring that birds and microbats have places to nest in our city.

Last week we finished the assessment, with volunteers working for almost 100 hours to assess more than 1600 trees. Citizen Foresters worked in small teams using ipads to upload the information directly to the database.

Habitat tree mapping will commence again in autumn 2020, when the deciduous trees have lost their leaves.
