During the election period, also known as caretaker period, Councils must comply with special arrangements to make sure the elections are fair and ethical. Councils are not allowed to make certain types of actions and decisions that could influence voters or have a major impact on the new Council.

The Election Period Policy prescribes what is prohibited in accordance with the Local Government Act 2020.

On Tuesday 30 July 2024, Council adopted City of Melbourne’s 2024 Election Period Policy, which can be found at Governance Rules.

Caretaker period for Melbourne City Council commences at 12 noon on Tuesday 17 September 2024, and concludes at 6pm on Saturday 26 October 2024.
