New park for Kensington

April 30, 2018

We hope that you are enjoying Kensington’s newest park at Eastwood Street and Rankins Road. The park was completed in mid-2016.

Traffic count data has been collected on December 2014, April 2016 and August 2017, and provided in the previous update in July 2017. In addition, we have also undertaken a 12 month post implementation review of any impacts from the introduction of the full-time right turn ban into Rankins Road from Macaulay Road.

The key findings of the review are that:

  • The introduction of the full-time right turn ban from Macaulay Road into Rankins Road has had no significant adverse impacts in terms of traffic redistribution within the local street network in Kensington, north of Macaulay Road.
  • Most of the traffic which previously turned right into Rankins Road has redistributed to Stubbs Street. This includes through traffic destined for Racecourse Road, which may use local east-west streets off Stubbs Street in order to avoid queues at the Stubbs Street and Racecourse Road intersection. The City of Melbourne has not received any complaints from the local community.

On 22 March 2018 State Government officially reserved the parkland for the purpose of public park, and appointed Council as Committee of Management on 6 April 2018.

To ensure this new open space for Kensington is better protected into the future the planning zone for the parkland will need to be changed to Public Park and Recreation Zone.
