Notice was given pursuant to the Naming Rules for places in Victoria 2022 (‘Rules’) that the Melbourne City Council (‘Council’) proposes to name the east-west section of CL0405 in North Melbourne as ‘Anastasia Lane’ (the ‘Proposal’).

The naming is required to provide appropriate addressing for abutting properties, ensure the integrity of Council's records and support the provision of emergency and statutory services."

The lane is located on the site of the now demolished Melbourne Benevolent Asylum. Opened in North Melbourne in 1851, it provided refuge for the growing numbers of poor, disabled, and aged in the Port Phillip Settlement. Demolished in 1911, it was a landmark building of early Melbourne.

Anastasia Leahy was the longest serving resident of the Melbourne Benevolent Asylum. Entering in 1857, she lived there until it was relocated to Cheltenham in 1911.

The proposed name uses the first name of Anastasia Leahy.
