What is a raised platform?

Raised platforms are elevated sections of the road that aim to reduce vehicle speeds and make the area safer for pedestrians.

What is a pedestrian refuge island?

A pedestrian refuge island is a small area in the middle of a road, usually protected with kerbing, where pedestrians can safely wait before crossing the second half of the road. These make crossing the road safer for pedestrians because they need only find a gap in one direction of traffic at a time.

What is painted median?

Painted medians refer to an area in the middle of a road marked out with paint to separate traffic flows in either direction and provide protected right turn lanes into side roads. Painted medians can improve traffic flow for motorists who can more safely slow down to turn right, as well as provide safer crossing points for pedestrians and greater separation between vehicles and cyclists.

What are kerb ramps?

A kerb ramp is an inclined surface which bridges the height difference between a footpath and roadway. This makes it easier for pedestrians and people using devices like wheelchairs or prams to cross the kerb without having to step up or down.

What are speed humps?

Speed humps are elevated section of the road – typically smaller in area than a raised platform – designed to reduce vehicle speeds and improve safety on local streets. Speed humps cover a greater section of the road compared to a speed bump, meaning motorists can slow down more gradually.

What is a zebra crossing?

A zebra crossing is a typical pedestrian crossing that is level with the road and marked with white horizontal stripes.

What is a raised pedestrian crossing/wombat crossing?

A raised pedestrian crossing – also known as a wombat crossing – is a pedestrian crossing marked with white horizontal stripes on top of an elevated section of the road (i.e. a raised platform). This makes it safer for pedestrians to cross the road because they are more visible to motorists, and the raised platform encourages motorists to slow down.

What is a kerb extension?

A kerb extension involves widening the footpath so that it extends onto the road. This creates shorter crossing distances for pedestrians, improves visibility for both pedestrians and motorists and can reduce vehicle speeds.

What is a shared path priority crossing?

A continuation of a shared path over the road, where motorists must give way to bikes and pedestrians. The crossing is typically on a raised platform, which makes pedestrians and cyclists more visible to motorists. Those using the shared path have priority over road traffic.
