Project update – Elm Genetic Diversity

October 28, 2016

The University of Melbourne have been using the latest genetic sequencing equipment to analyse the elm leaf samples collected by Citizen Foresters.

Preliminary results from paternal DNA have identified some clear groupings of genetically similar or identical trees, as well as some unique elms.

The next phase of analysis will focus on understanding the maternal lineage of the elms, which will provide a complete picture of the genetic diversity of Melbourne’s elms.

Ultimately, this information will help us to cultivate a more diverse and resilient elm population in the future.
