There are a number of factors that have led to the decision to redesign and rebuild the Lady Huntingfield Children’s Centre in North Melbourne, including population growth, increasing demand for childcare and the current condition of the existing structure.

In 2016, the City of Melbourne unanimously resolved to progress the planning to expand childcare places in North Melbourne through the development of an integrated family and children's centre. This included increasing places at the nearby Hotham Hub Children’s Centre to provide 59 new child care spaces. The additional spaces will accommodate children currently enrolled and staff operating out of the Lady Huntingfield Children’s Centre.

The new centre will be an integrated children and family centre offering: childcare, kindergarten, maternal child health and immunisation services, parenting support services and playgroups.
