Council announces new homelessness protocol

September 27, 2017

Council and Victoria Police have announced a formal operating protocol to address rough sleeping in the city. In conjunction, Council also agreed at its meeting on 26 September to suspend its considerations on the proposed amendments to the Activities Local Law at this time, pending further assessment of the protocol over the next six months.

Since March the City of Melbourne and Victoria Police have been trialling a response in the way that we approach encampments in the city. The new protocol with Victoria Police formalises this trial. We also continue to work with the Victorian Government and Housing and Homelessness Agencies on medium and long term solutions to homelessness.

The protocol and our ongoing work to address homelessness means we can act quickly to protect public safety and amenity, while also ensuring that the most vulnerable people in the city have access to the services they need.
