City of Melbourne is renewing the Birrarung Marr playground to create a safer and more accessible space for families to enjoy.

The much-loved playground has brought joy to the community for more than 20 years, and it’s time for a refresh – with renewed play equipment, improved safety features and modern amenities. This project will also help grow our garden city, with nature play and more than 40 new trees.

During consultation in 2024, the community told us that safety, accessibility and extra seating were top priorities. We’ve taken that feedback on board and developed a design that delivers all of this, while embracing natural elements to keep the space playful and inviting.

The project will deliver:

  • new play equipment, including slides, a swing and a climbing net
  • interactive landscape elements such as a log trail and climbing mounds
  • improved safety features including new
  • softfall mulch
  • new plants and more than 40 new trees.

Works are expected to start in early April 2026 and be completed by late 2026, subject to weather conditions.
