Proposal for new civic centre and more open space

February 8, 2017

The City of Melbourne proposes to enter into a commercial arrangement with Cairo Melbourne Pty Ltd for a residential and commercial development to be built on a portion of the former JH Boyd School in Southbank.

The proposed development will include improvements to the public realm, apartments, retail, affordable housing and open space and reinforces the City of Melbourne’s commitment to transform the former school site into a key civic centre and provide much-needed open space for Southbank residents, workers and visitors. This commercial arrangement was negotiated after the previous contract of sale from 2011 was terminated last year.

Entry into the contract of sale is subject to and conditional on a public submission process under the Local Government Act 1989.

The proposed sale of the site at 229 City Road in Southbank will be considered by Council in early 2017.
