Melbourne Waterbug Blitz 2018

October 31, 2018

Thank you to those who attended one or all of the Melbourne Waterbug Blitz 2018 citizen science events.

Despite the rainy downpour in the morning, we successfully sampled six different sites, including:

  • Carlton Gardens
  • Domain Parklands (Queen Victoria Gardens)
  • Fitzroy Gardens
  • Royal Park (Trin Warren Tam-boore wetland)

Plus, two additional sites at Westgate Park and the Australian Native Garden pond in Royal Park.

From the results, we found:

  • 21 taxa groups of waterbugs on the day, including seven different groups in a water fountain.
  • Westgate Park Wetlands and Royal Park Wetlands gave us the highest amount of waterbugs and had the highest habitat rating.
  • All of the groups recorded (bloodworms, snails, midge larva) had a relatively high tolerance to a broad range of impacts, e.g. pollution, stormwater run-off.

We will now collate our results, analyse them, and provide management recommendations for our wetlands to help enhance waterbug species diversity in our urban waterways.
