Melbourne is open for business, shopping, dining, exploration and of course, coffee.
Our extended outdoor dining program was designed to help local hospitality businesses welcome the community safely back to the cafes and restaurants we know and love. From 22 February to 7 March we asked how you've received the program – what you’ve enjoyed and what we could improve. Consultation has now closed.
In October 2020 we established the extended outdoor dining program to support business during the COVID-19 pandemic.
We fast-tracked permits enabling businesses to create innovative outdoor dining spaces in laneways, on footpaths and in on-street car spaces which we’ve called ‘parklets’.
We installed safety infrastructure such as barriers and planter boxes to ensure workers and customers were protected from traffic, and maintained a strict cleaning, watering and maintenance schedule.
We consulted with residents and businesses before and during the program and set up designated hotlines for each.
