The conversation

We’re upgrading Clayton Reserve Dog Park to create a safer, nature-friendly more enjoyable space for local dogs and their owners.

Community feedback collected through consultations helped inform our draft concept plan. We heard community wanted to better lighting, drainage and improved fencing and gates. This phase of engagement asked our community for feedback on the draft plan.

Gathering insights

Engagement took place from Monday 2 June to Monday 30 June 2025.

The engagement involved:

  • two in-person sessions in the park during peak times (Friday 6 June and Saturday 21 June) talking directly to dog owners who use the park regularly
  • an online survey on Participate Melbourne
  • hard copy surveys.

What we heard

Survey responses

We received a total of 166 survey responses (including 45 surveys received across the two 2 pop-up events).

Pop-up events

Staff interacted with approximately 55 community members across the pop-up events (answering questions, encouraging completion of the survey).

  • 70% support the draft concept plan (16% neutral and 14% did not support the plan).
  • 69% support the designated areas for quiet and confident dogs (17% do not prefer designated areas and 14% had no opinion).
  • Strong support for park furniture improvements including a shelter, dog water fountains and more seating.
  • Key concerns were loss of grass for granitic sand, loss of larger areas for big dogs to run and concerns about too many trees.

  • "The improved irrigation is great as there are often large and messy puddles."
  • "The seating and landscaping sounds like a large improvement."

Impact

We will use what we heard from community to inform detailed design to ensure the project meets community needs and expectations.

Next steps

Next steps include detailed landscape design and detailed investigations, including soil sampling.
