MPavilion: Festival of Design - Saturday 23 March 2024

City of Melbourne’s Excellent City Series returns to MPavilion on Saturday 23 March for The Festival of Design.

The Festival of Design will unpack City of Melbourne design projects and explore interdisciplinary co-creation, designing for Country, and how unlikely partnerships and perspectives may influence ways of doing things, for the better.

Hear from artists, agitators, Elders, professionals and academics during an afternoon of sequential collaborative workshops, discussions and performances. This free, interactive event invites people of all ages and backgrounds to participate in lively discussions on the future needs of the city through the lens of design excellence.

  • 12pm – Welcome to Country and introductions
  • 12.45pm - Designing for storytelling: Good design, like good storytelling, brings ideas to life. This session will explore the role designers play in facilitating storytelling, cultural awareness and education in public spaces, and how design can amplify the narrative power of diverse communities and cultures.
  • 2.45pm - Designing with water: Melbourne's water story has been irrevocably shaped by progress and the impacts of our changing climate. This session will explore how original, creative approaches and traditional knowledge are delivering innovative outcomes for improving our urban water environment.
  • 4.45pm - Designing for belonging: Our everyday lives are touched by the places that surround us, affecting how we understand, interact with and feel about our cities. This session will explore how conscious design practice can facilitate connection and a sense of belonging with the built environment, in turn creating culturally safe spaces.
  • 6.15pm - Reflections and Celebration of Design: The afternoon will culminate in a reflection of the day, and a celebration of design with music and food - bringing together community, event producers and the designers.
