Elizabeth Street South streetscape upgrade works postponed until 2019

December 8, 2017

The permanent creation of new public space in Elizabeth Street South has been postponed by 12-months and will now commence in 2019.

Construction of a premier development at 276 Flinders Street, fronting this section of Elizabeth Street, is due to commence in February 2018, limiting our ability to build the new public space immediately.

The decision to postpone construction of the permanent public space is based primarily on maintaining pedestrian safety around construction activities at 276 Flinders Street. We also want to ensure that we prevent damage to new public space infrastructure that would likely result from construction vehicles in this space.

Council is committed to building the new permanent space in 2019. In the meantime, we are creating a pop-up park for the community to enjoy over summer before we close the road permanently. The pop-up park will be in place from 13 December 2017 until 28 January 2018.
