The permanent creation of new public space in this section of Elizabeth Street has been postponed by 12 months. Construction works to extend a building at 276 Flinders Street, fronting this section of Elizabeth Street, commenced in June 2018 limiting Council’s ability to build the new public space as previously planned in early 2018. It is anticipated that these works will take one year to complete. Once works at 276 Flinders Street are completed, Council will permanently close the eastern side of the road to traffic and commence construction of the new streetscape.

The decision to postpone construction of the permanent public space was based primarily on maintaining pedestrian safety around construction activities at 276 Flinders Street. We also want to ensure that we prevent damage to new public space infrastructure that would likely result from construction vehicles in this space.
