Micro-Labs is saying goodbye

February 24, 2023

After more than a year since it first opened its doors, Micro-Labs is bidding Melbourne farewell.

Since May 2022, this pilot has welcomed more than 15,000 visitors and hosted hundreds of events from late night study sessions and creative meetups to ‘Queer Salsa’, women’s soldering workshops and local community film nights. Within months, a collaborative and diverse community has embraced the value of this free, flexible, co-designed and digitally enabled community space.

From 1 March, Micro-Labs will no longer be open as a library or co-working space with regular opening times. It will be bookable for events, co-working, meetings and more via the booking form on the website.

The objective of Micro-Labs is to test an innovative idea: to partner with community and use technology and data to transform an empty city shopfront into a shared space and bring back the ‘buzz’ to the city. Following a successful initial six months, Micro-Labs was extended, which enabled us to collect more data and maximise the pilot.

Learnings from this project will continue to inspire and help implement innovation in other City of Melbourne spaces and programs such as our libraries and community hubs.

Micro-Labs will officially close its doors on 30 June and we’re taking bookings up to early June. This is your last chance to book a space to host an event or meeting or browse online for upcoming events.
