Place audits are helping us understand these open spaces

March 22, 2022

Over three days, 30 hours of observational data was collected on-site at Macarthur Square, Drummond Street and Argyle Square by seven place auditors, as part of the Social Spaces pilot.

Place audits collect a variety of observational data including patterns of movement, time spent in place, perceptions of safety, the use of public infrastructure (for instance eating lunch, resting, meeting people) and more.

This data is used to develop insights across these three sites to inform the design of new public furniture. We're exploring if data-driven design can lead to infrastructure that better fits the needs of our community.

Designers at Spark Furniture are developing designs to manufacture and test on site at the Drummond Street median in Carlton later this year.
