We used data to design this chair

November 21, 2022

Data informed the latest design in the Drummond Street median strip – a popular space for locals and visitors to hang out.

After observing users and conducting surveys in November 2021, place auditors at Drummond Street, Carlton, revealed some ways furniture could improve the space for locals and visitors.

This design invites playfulness with a small stage, creates places to gather and offers an efficient and unique design that complements the existing flow of pedestrians while being considerate of existing traffic flow on Drummond Street.

This accessible, comfortable and beautiful ‘chair’ will be installed in December. We will use sensors, conduct observational audits and invite community consultation to capture data and understand the impacts of this new piece of furniture. This will inform how we use data in our future design processes.

Learn about the data that led to the design before visiting the chair on Drummond Street later this year.
