City of Melbourne is creating a new Heritage Strategy. We are consulting closely with Wurundjeri Woi-wurrung and Bunurong Traditional Owners on the strategy. We also want to hear the voices of the broader Victorian Aboriginal* community:

  • Many members of the Aboriginal community work, live and visit within the City of Melbourne.
  • As a capital city, we have a particular history. For example, Parliament and many other institutions that have impacted Aboriginal lives are here, and we have and continue to be a centre of Aboriginal activism.
  • As a capital city we have a particular opportunity for truth-telling, with a high number of local and international visitors, school groups etc.

Our current draft Heritage Strategy identifies 5 priorities for action over the next 10 years and beyond. Please refer to the draft Melbourne Heritage Strategy for further information.

* Victorian Traditional Owners, clans, family groups, and all other people of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander descent living in Victoria.

The five priorities are:
  • Aboriginal Heritage

Ensuring Aboriginal culture is prominent in all our heritage activities.

  • Powerful Experiences

Sharing the layers of knowledge, history and stories of Melbourne.

  • Distinctive Places

Heritage should continue to be legible and inform how the city develops.

  • The Climate and Biodiversity Emergency

How we can adapt heritage places in making Melbourne more sustainable and resilient to climate change.

  • Stewardship

Caring for our heritage places for the benefit of past, present and future generations.

The short survey below has been designed with these priorities in mind.
