The Victorian Government is standardising household recycling across Victoria, so your access to waste and recycling services will be the same no matter which council area you live in.

The proposed Household Waste and Recycling Service Standard 2024 has been released and is now open for community consultation.

These regulations will mandate how the City of Melbourne delivers household waste and recycling services, including introducing a separated glass recycling bin. According to the draft standards, of 1 July 2027 each household will need to have access to four separate services:

  • general rubbish
  • mixed recycling
  • glass recycling
  • food organics and garden organics (FOGO).

Consultation closes Wednesday 14 August.
