The City of Melbourne is seeking Expressions of Interest (EOI) to fill three vacancies on the Invest Melbourne Advisory Board with subject matter experts in the life sciences, venture capital and retail sectors.

Representatives from a cross section of the investment sector with experience, knowledge and expertise in strategic investment and Melbourne’s economy are encouraged to apply.

The Board was established on 14 December 2021 and comprises of up to eight external subject matter experts with deep commercial and business experience, two Councillors and City of Melbourne management representatives.

The Board provides strategic advice to the City of Melbourne on the potential opportunities for growth of investment for the city and offers feedback on proposed initiatives that support investment in the city.

Applications will close on 11.59pm on Wednesday 17 July 2024.

Board purpose

The Boards purpose is to:

  • Provide strategic advice and independent thinking to inform policy and productive investment in the municipality.
  • Champion and proactively advocate for Invest Melbourne to Australian and international business communities, as well as key government departments, industry associations and other prominent stakeholders.
  • Provide critical understanding of business, market and industry trends while also providing insights and options for improving the delivery of strategic business development initiatives in Melbourne.
  • Provide advice on ways to streamline business processes making it easier for the business community to operate in and with the city.

What we are looking for

We’re looking for subject matter experts in the life sciences, venture capital and retail sectors, with extensive expertise in driving investment growth, and a critical understanding of business, market, and industry trends from both a domestic and international perspective. Board members will have the capacity to offer strategic advice to City of Melbourne on the opportunities to attract and drive growth of investment in the municipality.

The City of Melbourne will make appointments based on merit, skill, expertise and leadership qualities. The members will bring specialist expertise and skills, relevant networks connections, innovative thinking and be an advocate and champion in harnessing domestic and foreign direct investment opportunities to the municipality.

Members of the Board will be appointed for a term commencing from their first meeting through to 31 March 2026. Meetings take place at a minimum of three times per year.

Eligibility criteria

Applicants need to meet the following eligibility criteria:

  • Representatives must be from Melbourne based economy sectors, including peak bodies and those working with local, national, and international networks.
  • Have specialist skills, experience, and knowledge in one of the following sectors: life sciences, venture capital and retail.
  • Available to attend all meetings.
