Contractor appointed to KCRC redevelopment

November 17, 2021

Council has appointed a contractor in October to redevelop the Kensington Community Recreation Centre. Works to prepare the site for demolition will continue into early next year.

Since October, the centre has been emptied and the pool has been drained in preparation for works to commence. We relocated the majority of gym equipment to North Melbourne Community Centre, where members can continue to access it, and we donated a number of items to community groups and local charities.

New group fitness classes were also added to North Melbourne Community Centre and Kensington Town Hall to help the community stay active while the centre is being redeveloped.

Through the community engagement process, we heard that the community was keen to have the eels from the 2006 Commonwealth Games incorporated into the new centre. We have therefore safely removed the two eels and placed them into storage while the existing facility is being demolished.

Once complete, the redevelopment will bring state-of-the art facilities to the community, including an eight lane 25-metre pool, a children’s water play area, health and wellness areas, three indoor multi-sports courts, three large flexible spaces suitable for a range of classes and community use, accessible change rooms including an adult accessible change facility, a wrap-around café with multiple access points and community spaces.
