A safer and greener Southbank

During community consultations in 2023 and 2024, you told us that creating a safe park and reducing anti-social behaviour was important to you. We’re now working with an independent safety consultant to review the park and proposed changes to ensure the design follows best-practice safety standards.

In response to your feedback, the draft design aims to build neighbourhood connection through features such as:

  • Over 700 square meters of additional open space.
  • 15 new trees to provide shade and create cooler environment in summer.
  • New gardens beds and low plants to support wildlife.
  • Changing the traffic flow on Miles Street from two way to one way between Dodds and Wells streets - encouraging slower speeds and safer driving.
  • Amenities and plants that are easy to maintain to promote a cleaner environment and reduce vandalism.
  • New plants to soften the look of the substation, with the opportunity to create a mural to bring colour to the area to reduce the chance of graffiti and tagging.
  • More public open space with dedicated areas for activities to encourage sport, recreation and community gatherings.
  • Additional streetlights to create a brighter environment for people travelling through the area in the evenings.
  • Landscaping improvements and short plants to ensure clear lines of sight across the park.
  • A pedestrian crossing to help people cross the road safely, reduce traffic speed and encourage active transport.
  • A small fence to separate the park from the road, creating a safer space.
  • Street furniture such as seats and picnic tables facing away from properties to ensure privacy.
  • Modern amenities such as bike hoops, rubbish bins and a drink fountain.
  • Removing four car parks and keeping 23.
