Ahead of Father’s Day, more dads want to participate in caregiving but face barriers

August 30, 2024

Lead by the Preventing Violence Together partnership, which City of Melbourne is a member of, the report is called Working Dads: Towards Equal Care.

It shares the experiences of 155 working dads in Melbourne’s west and sheds light on the challenges and aspirations of dads in balancing work and caregiving responsibilities. The report discusses the importance of workplaces supporting men as caregivers. When fathers take an equal share of parental leave, it leads to better mental health outcomes for families as well as in workplaces.

The report found:

  • Almost half of dads surveyed faced barriers to accessing parental leave, mainly due to workplace culture.
  • 7 in 10 dads said their workplaces had flexible work policies, but just as many faced workplace culture barriers to utilising these policies
