Latin American community builds belonging in Carlton

August 15, 2024

People from diverse Latin American backgrounds have come together in Carlton for a series of workshops designed to boost social cohesion, belonging and wellbeing.

There are nearly 48,000 people with Latin American heritage living in Victoria, hailing from countries including Colombia, Chile, Argentina and Brazil.

The greatest concentration of the Latin American community is in inner Melbourne, and Spanish is among the top five languages spoken in the City of Melbourne.

Dr Trini Abascal, who came to Australia from Mexico, co-founded Latin Stories Australia to collect the voices of the local migrant community and develop initiatives that respond to community needs. We awarded the group a Community Inclusion Grant to bring people together at Kathleen Syme Library and Community Centre.
