Wildlife Friendly Gardening – growing indigenous plants from seed

Learn how to grow indigenous plants from seed and create space for nature in our city!

Come and learn about the importance of planting indigenous plants to celebrate the character of the local environment and enhance our local biodiversity. At this interactive session you’ll meet other like-minded gardeners and have a chance to look, feel and smell some of our favourite indigenous plants for gardens in Carlton.

Sophia Blosfelds and Katherine Horsfall, from the Green Infrastructure Research Group at the University of Melbourne, will give an overview of their meadow projects and seed production area work. They will also run a practical activity with unprocessed seed samples, demonstrating some of the processes and techniques they've been using to clean up seed ready for sowing.

Mars from Westgate Biodiversity, Bili Nursery and Landcare will speak about ideal indigenous plants for Carlton gardens, specifically plants that are prolific seed producers or that grow well from seed. Mars will be offering a mix of plants on the day, both for demonstration and for you to take home and try in your own garden.
