CBD library narrm ngarrgu opens with community day

December 1, 2023

Neighbourhood partners from across the City of Melbourne met with community at the opening of CBD's newest library and family services space, narrm ngarrgu.

Located opposite Queen Elizabeth Market and next to the LIV Munro residential precinct, narrm ngarrgu is over 3000 sqm in size, hosting more than 30,000 books.

The open day on Saturday, 25 November saw community turn out in droves to see the new CBD venue.

Neighbourhood partners, Rei Chin, Kimberley Pierzchalski and Tallia Gilarry were excited to guide community members through the Neighbourhoods Discovery Stall.

"We had a community mood board, drive-by trivia and Polaroid pictures for people to engage with," CBD Neighbourhood Partner, Rei said.

"We were right at the entrance of the first floor, which meant we talked to lots of people, asking their first impression of the space and taking the opportunity to ask them about what they love and what they envision for the neighbourhood."

"There was lots of interest in the Connected Neighbourhoods Small Grants, and many people were surprised by the vast array of very grassroots projects we can fund."

Rei said she plans to work closely with library staff to support the community.

"I'm looking forward to working with the library staff and the many and diverse residents in the area. We spoke to many international students, young renters, long-term residents who have watched the area transform and new young families who are so pleased to have a children's library in walking distance," she said.
