Footpath Upgrade Works

August 28, 2023

City of Melbourne is planning to reconstruct the footpath on Merchant Street as part of our Capital Works Program for 2023-24, which improves public safety and the experience of footpaths for people at different locations across the city.

Works are anticipated to start late September 2023 and will take approximately 10 weeks to complete. Works will be undertaken in sections along the east and west sides of the street.

Works include:

  • Road resurfacing
  • Replacement of bluestone and concrete pavers
  • Reconstruction of asphalt footpath in bluestone
  • Reconstruction of vehicle crossings and pedestrian access ramps
  • Reconstruction and enlargement of existing tree plots
  • Kerb and channel works
  • Installation of street furniture and tactile ground surface indicators.

What to expect:

  • Construction hours will be 7am to 5pm Monday to Friday. Occasional weekend work may be required between 8am to 5pm.
  • Access to residential properties and businesses will be maintained at all times.
  • Our delivery partners Citywide will communicate with you before works begin or if there are any changes or delays to works.

How could this impact you?

  • Pedestrian, vehicle and bicycle access will be restricted for short periods. Traffic management will be in place to guide footpath, road, and bike lane users around the works.
  • Some works such as demolition and construction will involve some noise.
  • You may notice an increase in construction vehicles and workers in the area.

For your safety, please observe any signs and instructions in place during this project.
