How to ride safely in Victorian taxis and rideshares

March 14, 2025

Find out how to 'Ride Smart, Ride Safe' and feel more confident and informed about your taxi journeys.

Getting from A to B should be simple, safe, and fair. But when it comes to taxis and rideshares, not everyone knows what to expect - or what to do if something doesn’t seem right.

Ride Smart, Ride Safe is a new initiative from Safe Transport Victoria to help you feel more confident and informed about your journeys. Whether it’s understanding fares, avoiding unregulated services, or knowing how to report concerns, it's important to know how to travel smarter and safer.

What you need to know
  • Taxi meters must always be on for rank and hail trips. No guessing, no negotiating, just a fair, transparent fare every time.
  • Touting is illegal. Only use taxis and rideshares from official ranks or book through a trusted app to avoid unregulated services.
  • Reporting issues is easy. Whether it’s a fare dispute, inappropriate behaviour, or a safety concern, Safe Transport Victoria is here to help.
  • A QR code system is rolling out. Keep an eye out for QR codes inside taxis and rideshares, making it even easier to report concerns if something isn’t right.

Understanding your rights is the first step in making every journey safer and fairer.
