International Overdose Awareness Day

August 29, 2025

In the lead-up to International Overdose Awareness Day this Sunday 31 August, we’re sharing information about support and services available to the community.

The Coroners Court recently released a report stating overdose deaths reached a 10-year high in Victoria in 2024. And in Australia, three people die every day from opioid-related use. Anyone can experience an opioid overdose – including people prescribed opioids for pain management.

Information can help save lives, which is why we’re sharing information about naloxone – a safe and effective medicine that can temporarily reverse the effects of an opioid overdose. Naloxone is available for free under the Australian Government's National Take Home Naloxone program but many people who could benefit from naloxone don’t know it exists or how to use it.

Follow these links to learn more about naloxone, and other support services available to the community. If you or a family member would like to talk to someone about your wellbeing, drug use or mental health, you can call Lifeline on 13 11 14.
