Support for North Melbourne public housing residents

August 19, 2025

In September 2023, the Victorian Government announced the plan to redevelop the 44 high-rise public housing towers across Victoria.

Since the announcement, Homes Victoria identified the North Melbourne public housing towers as one of the first sites to be redeveloped. The current North Melbourne public housing site is located on land owned by the Victorian Government, within the City of Melbourne municipality. The redevelopment project is being delivered by Homes Victoria, a Victorian Government agency.

City of Melbourne is a key stakeholder in this project, and we have made submissions to both Homes Victoria's visioning process and recent Parliamentary Inquiry. The submission advocates for:

  • meaningful engagement with the community and key stakeholders throughout the redevelopment process
  • provision of appropriate on-site services throughout the redevelopment process and ongoing as part of the new development
  • an increase in the number of social housing dwellings above the proposed 10 per cent uplift
  • good design and planning that provides the community with access to parks and other amenities that support people's wellbeing.

Resident support

City of Melbourne acknowledges the disruption caused by this project and the impacts on the residents at 33 Alfred Street and the local community. Were committed to supporting the North Melbourne public housing community during this time and pursuing the best possible outcomes for the community.
