Call for helpers to count fairy wrens

November 20, 2024

A project focused on the preservation of fairy wrens needs your help to count the number of wrens in Melbourne.

Be part of an urban bird bioblitz from the 24 – 30 November by doing a 15-minute wren-watch. Superb fairy-wrens - sometimes called blue wrens - and other small birds are reducing in cities. The City of Melbourne, along with local councils and community groups across greater Melbourne are working to bring them back to our parks and gardens through urban citizen-science project, Superb City Wrens.

By doing wren-watches during the bioblitz week you can help find out where these birds hide across the city and understand more about what type of landscape they need to thrive.

Places in the City of Melbourne to hunt for small urban birds

  • Royal Park: especially around the Trin Warren Tam-Boore wetland, vegetation around Melbourne Zoo and Australian Native Garden
  • Princes Park and Melbourne Cemetery: especially vegetation along the Inner Circle Rail Trail and shrubs in the cemetery
  • Moonee Ponds Creek: anywhere along the creek
  • Westgate Park: anywhere in the park
