Queen Victoria Market Circular Economy Precinct

July 23, 2025

Following the success of our first Circular Economy precinct in Kensington, we’re partnering with social enterprise STREAT to launch the Queen Victoria Market Circular Economy Precinct.

Located at the Queen Victoria Market, the precinct involves three key initiatives:
  • Reuse pilot: this three-month pilot will run from July to September 2025 and is aimed at reducing sing-use takeaway packaging. You can get involved by grabbing some delicious food from one of the 20 participating food outlets in the market’s E and F sheds, where the containers, cutlery and crockery you use will be collected and washed on site by STREAT staff.
  • Scaling circular food processing: We’re collaborating with the Moving Feast Kitchen to recover unspoiled food from fruit and vegetable traders, repurposing it into new food products. This initiative will also involve the Health Promotion and Policy team to create meals for distribution to individuals experiencing food insecurity at RMIT University and Melbourne University.
  • Circular events: STREAT will deliver a program of circular economy events at the market, including cooking classes and repair workshops, aimed at educating the community on how they can be part of a circular economy.
You can get involved by grabbing some delicious food from the E and F sheds at Queen Victoria Market. The containers, cutlery and crockery you use at stores like Bingsu Ya or STREAT Café will be collected and washed on site by STREAT staff. While you’re there, you can also chat with STREAT staff and learn more about the circular economy and other ways you can help to prevent waste.

Find out more and come along to our launch event on 8 August.
