The Shrine marks Remembrance Day in 90th birthday year

November 1, 2024

Head to the Shrine of Remembrance in South Yarra on 11 November to remember those who served and or died in wars and peacekeeping operations.

Remembrance Day is observed very year at 11am on 11 November - the eleventh hour of the eleventh day of the eleventh month.

This year, the Shrine of Remembrance also marks its 90th birthday. For nine decades, it has been the home of commemoration and remembrance for the Victorian community. It aims to be a reminder of the fragility of peace and the cost of conflict, as well as a testament to the courage and generosity of those who serve.

The Shrine's architecture plays a pivotal role on Remembrance Day. At 11am, the Ray of Light illuminates the word ‘love’ on the Stone of Remembrance, symbolising the moment the Armistice was signed to end the First World War. The public can view this again at midday.

Everyone is welcome to join the service and you don’t need to book.
