Princes Bridge restoration

November 9, 2023

Project update

City of Melbourne is restoring the iconic 135-year-old Princes Bridge to ensure it can continue to support residents, workers and visitors for generations to come.

These works will be delivered in sections over the next three years, starting with Section 1 at the south end of the bridge between piers 7 and 10.

We’ve now established a worker's compound along Boathouse Drive which will be in place for the duration of the project and scaffolding will be assembled along the first section of the bridge. Work in this section is anticipated to be complete by mid to late 2024.

Hours of work

All works will be carried out between 7am to 4pm Monday to Friday and 8am to 3pm on Saturday when required.

There may be some noise and dust during construction hours.

To ensure there is minimal disruption over the summer period, works will pause from 21 December 2023 to 15 January 2024.

Pedestrian access

Access under the bridge and along the bridge may be restricted for short periods of time throughout the project.

Traffic management will be in place to support movement around the work area.

Upcoming work

The Princes Bridge restoration works include:

  • Replacing weathered bluestone blocks
  • Realigning and cleaning bluestone blocks
  • Repairing and repainting iron facades
  • Rewiring public lighting
