Improving road safety and walkability in Southbank

March 16, 2023

Let us know what pedestrian improvements should be implemented in Southbank to improve safety for the community. Consultation closes Monday 10 April 2023.

City of Melbourne is undertaking the Southbank Pedestrian and Road Safety Study to improve connectivity, access, amenity and safety in one of the city’s busiest areas. The study is being undertaken by transport engineering consultants Traffic Works and will include a review of:

  • serious crash locations using crash data reports
  • traffic count (speed, volume and movement) surveys of traffic, cyclists and pedestrians
  • Southbank Promenade sensor data
  • planned projects by City of Melbourne and Department of Transport and Planning
  • major developments and land-use changes
  • Strategies and Masterplans of the precinct
  • community concerns and requests, including factors such as speeding, connectivity, DDA compliance and accessibility.

In 2022, we undertook extensive community consultation in Southbank to identify issues that the community is facing. A recurring theme was that the streets are not pedestrian friendly, and that we need to make Southbank safer and more accessible. We used the feedback gathered during this process to identify 14 Southbank Neighbourhood priorities, two of which include ‘Pedestrian Safety’ and ‘Traffic and Noise Management’.

We are undertaking this study to deliver on these priorities, that will help to make Southbank a more welcoming environment for everyone to enjoy.
