Composting made clever – Worms at Work launch event

Come along to Fishermans Bend for the official launch of Worms at Work, a new initiative where urban worm farms are transforming food scraps into nutrient-rich compost – hidden inside specially designed community benches.

Three composting benches are now in place in Fishermans Bend and Yarra’s Edge, housing hundreds of worms who are hard at work creating a more sustainable city.

Join us at the launch event to see the composting benches in action at neighbouring business-led pilot sites. We'll start the night at Susuro Winery, where the first bench is located, and hear from City of Melbourne Innovation and Education portfolio head Cr Andrew Rowse, with the opportunity to meet the innovators behind the idea Zoe Wang (Upsoil Collective) and Michael Mobbs (The Off Grid Guy). The evening will conclude with a short walk over to St Ali Coffee Roasters to see the second bench in action.

This event is also a chance to celebrate with our pilot supporters – St Ali Coffee Roasters, Susuro Winery, Polynova, Mr Fox in a Box – and our community champions who help keep our benches functioning smoothly.

Worms at Work showcases how smart technology and community innovation can tackle one of the world’s biggest environmental challenges – food waste. With live data from Smart City sensors, insights from Council’s zero waste and climate resilience initiatives and support from local businesses, the pilot demonstrates how design and technology can create more circular, resilient and productive urban spaces in Melbourne and beyond.
