Greening Roden Street works update January 2025

January 23, 2025

City of Melbourne is turning pavement into green space on Roden Street, delivering a functional and more enjoyable landscape for the West Melbourne community.

What’s happening?

We’re creating a welcoming streetscape for locals to relax, take a stroll and enjoy time with friends and family. Works will start in mid to late February, and are expected to be complete by mid-2025.

The transformation will stretch from King Street to Spencer Street, featuring:

  • an additional 1000 square metres of greening
  • 43 new trees to provide shade and create a cooler environment in summer
  • garden beds with a mix of plants to improve biodiversity
  • a new accessible path network to help pedestrians move through the area
  • a speed hump to slow down traffic and create a safer street
  • Water Sensitive Urban Design infrastructure to reduce storm water run-off.

What to expect while works are underway

Works will be carried out between 7am to 5pm Monday to Friday, and occasionally between 8am to 3pm on Saturdays.

Temporary fencing will be installed around the construction site, and there will be an increase of machinery and noise.

Crews will aim to maintain car, bike and pedestrian access on Roden Street while works are underway, however, there will be occasional traffic disruptions. Traffic management will be in place and properties will be notified ahead of time.
