Existing Family, Youth, and Ageing and Inclusion services in the local area require a larger, fit-for-purpose home. The new Hub presents an opportunity to co-locate these services in one location and provide new spaces for the community to utilise. The new multi-use Hub will provide both the community, and the teams who deliver services to the community, with a range of spaces, distributed across five levels.

The new Community Hub will be a welcoming place where people can celebrate culture and connect with others. It will highlight the different histories, cultures, and voices that have shaped North Melbourne and will continue to do so in the future. The Hub will provide a place for the community to access services, share experiences, and feel like they belong.

Future Melbourne Committee (FMC) endorsed the draft concept design for public feedback on 10 September 2024. View the FMC report and concept design overview.

The purpose of the current engagement process is to show how earlier feedback from the community has influenced the proposed design. We are looking for your thoughts on the draft concept design and any suggestions that can help guide the next steps in the design process.

Recreation services

Recreation facilities (e.g. basketball and fitness equipment) are not proposed for this project site and will remain at the existing North Melbourne Community Centre.

Previous community feedback, neighbourhood priorities and the Macaulay Structure Plan, have identified the need for future redevelopment at Buncle Street Reserve which will be undertaken as part of City of Melbourne’s longer-term plan for recreation needs in the precinct.

Design approach

The existing buildings on the project site can feel closed off to the surrounding community. The new Hub and landscape will be located on the northern half of the Melrose Street site and will better connect with the neighbourhood. The existing Jean McKendry Neighbourhood Centre Hall and commercial kitchen will remain in operation during construction of the new Hub.

This draft concept design responds to earlier feedback from the community that you wanted high-quality outdoor spaces. By building ‘up’, we’ve created more space for an external ‘green living room’ to be built at the front door. The lower levels will be open and welcoming to the wider community with clear views of activity inside. Drop-in spaces and shared cooking facilities will be available for everyone to access. Upper levels and a lower ground floor will include more discrete programs, consultation rooms and services. The building will nestle into the surrounding landscape and connect to nature. There will also be a range of high-quality outdoor spaces throughout the building e.g. terraces, balconies and a rooftop garden.
