Place and Road Naming Policy and Guidelines endorsed by Council

May 3, 2024

At the Future Melbourne Committee (FMC) on Tuesday 23 April, Council endorsed a revised Place and Road Naming Policy following FMC resolution 6 February 2024.

The updated Policy was revised to include greater detail of the naming process and acknowledge what we heard during community consultation.

The updated Policy also:

  • Further clarifies the level of significance of naming proposals by distinguishing how different classes of naming will be defined.
  • Provides additional guidance on:
    • What types of names can be considered.
    • How precinct naming approaches will be developed.
    • The development of a register of names.
    • An annual public reporting mechanism of all names approved each year.
  • Defines when polling will be used with a focus on the most significant naming proposals and requires that the outcomes of any poll be considered at a Council meeting.

Information about future naming proposals open for community consultation will be provided via Participate Melbourne. This page will be updated to reflect endorsement of the Policy in the coming months.
