Consultation on the proposed naming of Council Laneway CL1100 in East Melbourne (adjacent to 188 George Street, East Melbourne) as ‘Amberley Lane' was open from 28 October to 5pm on Friday 6 December 2024.

This name has been approved by Geographic Names Victoria and Amberley was published in the Victoria Government Gazette on 10 April 2025.

Notice was given pursuant to the Naming Rules for places in Victoria 2022 (‘Rules’) that the Melbourne City Council (‘Council’) proposes to name Council Laneway CL1100 in East Melbourne (adjacent to 188 George Street, East Melbourne): ‘Amberley Lane’.

Application reference number: RN-2024-2.

The proposed name ‘Amberley Lane’, has been chosen because it addresses ‘Principle C: Linking the Name to Place’ of the Naming Rules for places in Victoria.

The proposed name links to the place by adopting the title of the heritage place at 188 George Street, East Melbourne, which abuts the laneway’s west interface.

Community consultation for the proposed naming of Amberley Lane, East Melbourne closed on 6 December 2024.

After considering community submissions, Council endorsed the proposal and lodged an application with Geographic Names Victoria (GNV) for their approval of the name.

GNV approved the name and Amberley Lane was published in the Victoria Government Gazette on 10 April 2025. This process is known as 'gazettal' and all gazettes are available online.
