Notice is given pursuant to Naming rules for places in Victoria – Statutory requirements for naming roads, features and localities – 2022 that the City of Melbourne proposes to name the road identified in the maps below as TiTree Walk.

The naming is required to provide appropriate addressing for abutting properties and tenancies, to ensure the integrity of Council’s records and support the provision of emergency and statutory services.

This information can also be viewed on Council's website.

The proposed name TiTree Walk reflects strong links to the local area’s cultural heritage and the road’s purpose as a connecting thoroughfare for pedestrians.

TiTree refers to the stump and bails made from locally grown TiTree for the first ever Melbourne Cricket Club (MCC) cricket match in November 1838 at the foot of Batman’s Hill, the former hill where Melbourne Quarter is situated. The local area also continued to host MCC’s early cricket matches until the mid-1840s.

TiTree’s reference to MCC’s early cricket matches, which brought the local community together to enjoy the sport, also reflects the road’s important role as a connector. The road is intended to connect pedestrians between Collins Street and Flinders Street and provide a public space where residents and workers can forge social connections.

Community consultation for the proposed naming of TiTree Walk, Docklands, closed on 17 December 2023.

Council received two submissions from community for this proposal.

After considering community submissions, Council endorsed the proposal and lodged an application with Geographic Names Victoria (GNV) for their approval of the name.

GNV approved the name, with a space added in TiTree Walk (to become Ti Tree Walk) in order to satisfy the State Government naming rules regarding two capitals in one word.

Ti Tree Walk was published in the Victoria Government Gazette on 1 February 2024. This process is known as 'gazettal' and all gazettes are available online.

Council's Geographic Information System branch will update our map base to reflect this new name.

Council has informed the developer to install signage.
