The City of Melbourne’s first Prevention of Violence Against Women (PVAW) Strategy, We Need to Talk: Preventing Violence Against Women Strategy 2013-2016, was an integral part of building CoM’s involvement in the PVAW and demonstrated its leadership in addressing systemic issues.
Since this time Council has continued to advocate, educate and demonstrate the need to eliminate violence against women and to address the inequalities women face.
The Creating Communities of Equality and Respect: Prevention of Violence Against Women Action Plan 2021-2024 follows on from this work and focuses on expanding CoM’s external primary prevention work while it continues its ongoing work creating a fair and equitable workplace.
The plan identifies four strategic themes and twelve actions to be delivered with our partners in year one (2021-22).
The four themes are:
- Advance women’s leadership and participation in economic, social and civic life across the municipality
- Promote the safety of women and girls in our communities and public spaces
- Engage men and boys to shift unhealthy norms of masculinity and condoning of violence
- Achieve sustainable primary prevention for our municipality.
Annual action plans and achievement reports will be developed and presented to Future Melbourne Committee for endorsement in June of each year.
