Principles

The draft master plan proposes eight principles to support the delivery of the Royal Park vision. These principles have shaped the detailed recommendations and actions in the plan.

  1. Walk together with Wurundjeri Woi-wurrung people to reconnect with Royal Park as an Aboriginal Place.
  2. Understand and protect the cultural heritage values of the park.
  3. Protect and grow the park for future generations.
  4. Ensure the park is a welcoming, safe and inclusive place for everyone.
  5. Plan for increased use and ongoing enjoyment though the provision of sport and recreation spaces and activities across the park.
  6. Plan for the diverse needs of park users.
  7. Protect and enhance biodiversity values in the park.
  8. Use landscape characters present in the park to guide future planning and design.

All recommendations within the draft master plan are evaluated on their ability to effectively deliver against this vision and principles.

Three key moves

  • Key Move 1:

Celebrating Aboriginal culture and furthering self-determination

    • The draft master plan acknowledges the park as Wurundjeri Woi Wurrung Country.
    • The draft master plan sets the framework for the whole park and the importance of walking together with Wurundjeri Woi Wurrung in Caring for Country.
  • Key Move 2:

    Caring for Nature

    • The draft master plan builds on years of ecological research in the park.
    • Royal Park is the most biodiverse park in the city; however, its values are fragmented. The draft master plan focuses on connecting biodiversity and improving its quality over time.
  • Key Move 3:

    Improving accessibility for all

    • The draft master plan focuses on how we improve the parks function for a range of visitors, including people with a disability, people of diverse cultural backgrounds, LGBTIQA+ and women.
    • Improvements include but are not limited to entries, wayfinding signage, paths, lighting and optimisation of recreation facilities.
