Royal Park is unique in its ability to foster play, exploration, spontaneity and moments of quiet reflection. It is a vibrant place offering a variety of tree-lined trails, circuits and open spaces with views of nature, sport and the impressive central city skyline.

What we heard in 2023

Community members who participated in earlier community consultation in 2023 were keen for Royal Park to be a place that is shared by everyone, multi-use and flexible for a range of community needs including organised sport, recreation, exercise and enjoyment of nature.

Aligned with this, we heard that participants would like Royal Park to be:

  • An inclusive and safe place where community could come together to be active, participate in recreational activities, meet, socialise, learn, connect and celebrate; and
  • A place that supports a thriving organised sports community with high-quality facilities and spaces.

The draft master plan supports the popular ideas put forward in Phase 1 consultation including:

  • Retaining and improving sports ovals and facilities.
  • Improving lighting around sports ovals and facilities.
  • Reviewing the current areas for dogs and dog owners.
  • Including areas for informal recreation, including disc golf in the park.
  • Increasing and enhancing areas in the park to play/ playground.
  • Developing and delivering community education programs, community gardens, places to gather like picnic and BBQ areas, and community events and activities.

Aspirations and priorities

The draft Master Plan identifies several aspirations for how we support recreation and community wellbeing in the park:

  • Support inclusive and diverse play experiences.
  • Respond to changing sport and recreation needs, including by increasing capacity of existing facilities.
  • Develop programs and activities to support a diverse range of participants to be active in the park.

Several priority actions within the draft Master Plan that apply to the whole park will also help support recreation and community wellbeing.

For example, the plan proposes upgrading sporting amenities to support greater diversity and participation.

There are also a number of specific upgrades to support recreation and wellbeing listed in area plans. Explore the draft Master Plan by area.
