Breathe easy in McKillop Street

October 20, 2021

At a Future Melbourne Committee meeting on 19 October 2021 City of Melbourne Councillors endorsed a proposal to make McKillop Street, between Little Collins and Bourke streets, a smoke-free and vape-free area.

Community consultation regarding the proposal took place during August/September which revealed strong community support for the area to become smoke-free and vape-free.

Key findings from the community consultation included:

  • A total of 169 individuals and 8 business responses were received via online surveys.
  • 90% of individuals are in support of the area becoming smoke-free and vape-free.
  • 29 individuals who responded indicated that they were a McKillop Street resident. 87 per cent (n=26) of McKillop Street residents are in support of the proposed smoke-free and vape-free area.

Seven of the eight businesses who responded expressed their support of the proposal with only one business who opposed.

Minutes from the meeting including the community engagement report can be viewed on the Council and Committee Meetings page.

Council will ensure the community is fully informed about the new smoke-free and vape-free area and will implement appropriate signage in McKillop Street.

The City of Melbourne is committed to protecting our community from the harms of smoking through the implementation of our Smoke-free Melbourne Policy.
