The new Southbank Library is linked to Council Major Initiative 38: Libraries, to ‘deliver a revitalised library network, to increase access for our diverse community and to help revitalise the city’. One of the outputs of this Major Initiative is the development of a new Southbank Library and the refurbishment of Boyd Community Hub.

Southbank is a rapidly growing neighbourhood.

  • Its residential population is expected to increase from 26,500 in 2023 to 44,500 by 2043.
  • Its worker population is expected to increase from 47,000 in 2023 to 67,000 by 2043.
  • Children aged 0-14 are the fastest growing demographic group – expected to increase by 2,100 by 2043, a 187 per cent rise.
  • It has a high concentration of young adults and professionals, with 42 per cent of residents aged 25–34, and a median age of 31 years.

The Boyd Community Hub refurbishment supports Council’s commitment to deliver facilities and services that support the needs of Southbank’s growing population. An internal review of Southbank’s anticipated community infrastructure requirements indicates more community infrastructure is needed by 2043 to accommodate future population growth, including Library Services, Maternal and Child Health Services, Family Services, programs for young people and older people and bookable community space.

Community feedback

Through the 2024 Neighbourhood Survey, the Southbank community has expressed a desire for:

  • more indoor, flexible and bookable spaces that can be accessed by the community at all times of day;
  • spaces and activities for children, families and youth
  • spaces for study, events and sports
  • extended hours at the Southbank Library and Boyd Community Hub
  • more welcoming community spaces for workers and international students,
  • flexible use of community spaces within the Boyd Development.
